A journey that started way back in 2016 is now ending. A powerful study of the human psyche, the American science fiction drama is a stranger to none. Perhaps it is this sheer quality of the show that keeps the fans glued to it. It allows them to explore a plethora of possibilities and dive right into the analysis of its character. Yes, we are indeed talking about Stranger Things. And ahead of its season 5, fans came up with some interesting theories surrounding to its central character.
What started with the disappearance of Will Byers into the Upside Down is now a global phenomenon. The entire world is still pining for the character, and by the famous phrase, “it is a beginning to an end,” Vecna certainly alluded to the chaos that will ensue, with “the spy zombie boy” at the center of all. It seems like fans could not get over the character ever since season 4, and this is high time we look into some of their theories.

Will may gain superpowers in Stranger Things 5
It would certainly be nice to see the boy who has gone through a lot finally go out there and kick some ass. It might be hard and cathartic for fans to see this version of Will because till now we have only seen him either as the victim or the kid who was kept a safe distance from the mayhem. However, it would bring the show’s two most loved characters- Eleven and Will side by side.

Will is a D&D master!
Yet another popular fan theory believes Will the wise is a D&D master. According to a popular Reddit hypothesis, Will’s character will rule season 5 since he is discreetly directing and shaping everything.

There is an undeniable narrative connection between Will’s real-world fantasy and the supernatural plot structure, such as the Will-centered building of the Upside-Down (his house) and the D&D-inspired features within it, which is why this idea receives a lot of positive feedback.
Is Will a Wizard? Perhaps he will come out as the Red D&D reigns supreme
Some Redditors also believe that Will is a Harry Potter-like wizard as he feels a supernatural connection with Vecna the way Potter felt with Voldemort. If such is the case, he certainly is having superpowers and will fight the final battle against Vecna.

It is impossible to ignore how neatly this illogical hypothesis fits into the peculiar world of Stranger Things. It makes logical that Vecna and Will’s version of themselves be included in the D&D scenario if Will created the Upside-Down mirror reality in a split second that captured his perspective on the world. If the egos of the other players in the game also transfer, this might also imply that Lucas is the Knight character class and Dustin is the Dwarf character class.

Or he might as well be the red dragon character he painted for Mike in season 4. As one of the Redditors rightly pointed out, the red dragon is only a more powerful creature than Vecna.

And if Will is some wizard, he might as well become a monster that becomes the cause of Vecna’s end. Well, it sure will be a beginning of an end.

Upside Down is frozen in time because of Will
The Upside-Down is created by memory. A memory one cannot let go of. And maybe the theory might get true given that Will the wise always wanted to be a kid and play D&D with his friends.

Notably, the sinister world was frozen in time on November 6, 1983, the day Eleven opened the Hawkins Lab mothergate, and Redditors had already sensed that this was the key to many of the answers. The clues as to how it was created point to Will, particularly given the D&D motif and the fact that Will disappears on this date.

That brings us to another fascinating theory.
Will becomes the villain in Stranger Things 5
Everything was fun and gay during their childhood days. Will and Mike along with their friends used to hang out and play D&D all the time. And then, one fine day, Eleven happened. A strange girl with telekinetic powers stole away Mike from him. And there’s a part of him who forever remain jealous of the girl, and all his pent-up rage and angst might just turn him into the greatest villain of all time.

As the fan-made posters suggest, some part of Vecna might have absorbed into him. And although a kind-hearted boy, his mental torture might be enough for him to be vulnerable. But since Vecna cannot control his mind, he might as well shake hands with him, pretty much the way he did with mind-flayer. This will surely be a spicy theory to think of Vecna as Will’s lich phylactery (no, not the clock!)

And to stop all this, here’s what the boy who has accidentally or intentionally stumbled into all this will have to do-
Will must accept growing up and letting go in order to defeat Vecna
In one of the mind-blowing hypotheses, a fan suggests that Will is holding on to the past which will lead to all the jealousy and time-freeze elements in Stranger Things 5. The fans agree that he needs to let go of the past that has filled him with grief and frustration. Only then the dark cloud of the sinister world that arches over the township of Hawkins will vanish for once and all.

Due in large part to the audience’s experience of witnessing these children develop into young adults, the concept of “growing up” has progressively become a major subject in the show. It would be a great dramatic story arc (certainly better than the ones in season 4) to tie the victory of good over evil into Will’s mature decisions to let go of his upbringing and accept the harsher realities of the larger world; its strength would be tied to the changing lives, bodies, and minds of its central characters.

It’s intriguing to think that Will could begin season 5 with good intentions before turning into a villain alongside or opposing Vecna. This is especially true if there is a Darth Vader-like realization that Will must ultimately make the ultimate sacrifice in order to take out Vecna and save his friends. Do save this article and come back to it after Stranger Things season 5 hits your screens to see which of these theories came to be true. Also, do not forget to give the Redditors a digital high-five if any of it proves to be true.
