Ozark Showrunner Chris Mundy Discusses Spin Off With “ways to stay inside the show” but Fans Will Still Be Disappointed
As happens with the end of every major movie or television series, fans of Ozark are finding it hard to bid goodbye to the show. Not only were they largely disappointed with the death of a character, irrespective of whether that fit into the storyline, but they also apparently found the last few episodes some of the worst from the series. Hence, their reaction to an Ozark spinoff might not be as great as initially anticipated.
Chris Mundy on the possibility of an Ozark spinoff
During its last few seasons, Ozark gradually become one of the most critically acclaimed series on Netflix. Fans were just as much in love with the cast and characters as they were with the plot. By the time the finale appeared on Netflix, Ozark’s popularity was at its peak. This meant that the demand for a spinoff higher than anticipated. Mundy commented on the same. He said, “It’s definitely something that people have talked about a bunch.”

As for the possibility of the spinoff, Mundy commented, “There’s nothing definitive. We’re lucky that people seem to really like the show so there’s obviously going to be some interest there.” With these statements, we know that one certainly cannot rule out the possibility of a spin-off. In fact, we might see it coming very soon. Which brings us to the next question- who and what will it focus on?
Why the spinoff might prove to be a disappointment to fans
Over the course of the 4 seasons of the Netflix Original, Ruth Langmore became a fan-favorite character. She was authentic. Her story was something that fans either related with or found themselves sympathizing with. Even actress Julia Garner made sure she left no stone unturned in her portrayal of this character, something she might make history at the Emmy awards for. Despite some questionable decisions she has made along the way, Ruth is easily the most interesting character of the series.

Although the cast of the series, from Sofia Hublitz (Charlotte Byrde) to Garner herself find that the decision to kill Ruth fits in perfectly well with the story, fans aren’t exactly happy with the same. The most obvious direction the spinoff could take would be to focus on Ruth’s life after the events of the finale. Fans could learn even more about her (very) dysfunctional family.
The series also isn’t big on character revivals. This rules out the possibility of Ruth making an appearance in an Ozark spinoff. Mundy has confirmed these allegations by saying, “I’m sure people probably would’ve been happier if Ruth was out there.” However, his respect for the original series reigns supreme as he added, “There are still ways to stay inside the show and revisit things.”

While we might not see Ruth again, an Ozark spinoff currently does not sound too bad. The creators were able to make this show that slowly became Netflix’s best. They surely can dig up enough plot to explore in a spinoff and make it just as engaging. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments. Also, don’t forget to stream Ozark while you’re at it.
