“You grow to look alike over time”: Neil Gaiman Laughs at How Dream Is a Reflection of Him
The Sandman is ruling the charts and how. Within just two weeks of release, the fantasy series has become one of the most loved shows on Netflix. What makes Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman stand out is its relatability to the original comic along with bang-on casting, screenplay, and acting.
While the fans are absolutely in awe of the show, they have also managed to point out striking parallelism between the protagonist Dream and the writer and executive producer, Neil Gaiman. Though all the characters have garnered immense love from the audience, the protagonist Dream has a special place in all The Sandman fans.

Has Neil Gaiman purposely made Dream his lookalike?
If we look closely, Dream’s physical features match Gaiman’s a lot. For example, both have long and shiny hair. There is also a theory floating among the viewers that the protagonist is the reflection of the writer as a person. However, Neil Gaiman denied the claims of him making Dream his lookalike.
The writer humorously stated that he often has to show people his pictures from 1988 to make them believe that he was nothing like Dream when the famous comic was released. Notably, it took a long 32 years for The Sandman to get adapted into a television series.
The writer talks about leaving his bits in each character
Netflix’s YouTube channel, Still Watching Netflix, recently released its Unlocked video for The Sandman, in which some of the cast and the creator sat together and discussed the show. During the interview, Gaiman clarified that viewers would find him in bits in all the characters. When writers pen down a story, they find parts of themselves that they can extract, use, burnish or recreate.

“It’s like people and their dogs who grow to look alike over time, you know. But having said that, the people who go, “Oh, you are Dream!”, it’s like well, yeah, but I’m also The Corinthian, and I am also Cain and Abel, and I’m all of them. I’m Matthew, the Raven, and I’m Merv Pumpkinhead, so you go and find the bits of yourself. That’s how you make characters up. So, obviously, there’s lots of me in Morpheus, but there’s lots of me in all of them,” Neil Gaiman stated.
Even if Gaiman has infused his personality traits into Dream, we bet no one is complaining. Dream is such a fascinating character that it just leaves the viewers spellbound. He comes with his own flaws, but it is something that makes him more beautiful.
