Julia Garner is inching towards her third Emmy. Who knows? The actress may have a double win this year. She had already won two Emmy in consecutive years for her portrayal of Ruth Langmore on the acclaimed series, Ozark. But this year, she got nominated for her leading role in Inventing Anna alongside Ozark. While her role in Ozark put her on the map, she achieved worldwide fame through her role as Anna Delvey. However, the actress does feel she hasn’t “recovered” from it.

Julia Garner says the effort was worth it for Inventing Anna

The Shonda Rhimes-produced series told the story of Anna Delvey, aka Anna Sorokin, the German-born fraudster who scammed the Manhattan elite out of their money. Inventing Anna was a major success for Julia Garner after Ozark. It pulled incredible numbers and stayed on the charts for several weeks. Playing the role of the Soho grifter wasn’t an easy one for the Emmy winner.

She explained, “It was so hard. I still haven’t recovered from it. I feel like I’ve aged 15 years. But it’s worth it. The main thing is not to overthink. You can’t look at the whole cake. You have to approach it one little bite [at a time].”

For the role, she had to switch from her Midwestern drawl to Delvey’s indiscernible European accent.

The actress had taken months to prepare for the role. She had met the actual Anna Delvey and watched her unreleased interviews to imitate her accent and her quirks to play her convincingly. Garner described Delvey as “hilarious and clever.” When they first met, she dug deeper beyond her page six poster child image to understand her motive. That really helped her to translate the character on screen.

The pressure was immense as she was playing a real-life character who was still alive. But Garner always pulls it off no matter how challenging the character is.
