Do the Events of ‘The Sandman and ‘Locke & Key’ Take Place in the Same Universe and Will They Have a Crossover?
The Sandman, based on Neil Gaiman’s 1989 DC Comics collection, was just released on Netflix after a long wait. Soon, the third and final season of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez IDW’s Locke & Key will be released on Netflix. There may not be much in common between these two series, other than their shared fantasy and comic book influences. However, Locke & Key and The Sandman shared a world at one point in their history. Here’s a look at how they’re related, and how that ties into the Netflix series.

A recently widowed mother Nina (Darby Stanchfield), and her kids Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), and Bode (Jackson Robert Scott) Locke move into Keyhouse, a house packed with mystical keys that have belonged to the Lockes for decades, in Locke & Key. They must also fight the threats, including wicked demons, as they uncover the keys’ abilities.
On the other hand, Dream/Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), the king of dreams, is imprisoned for more than a century in The Sandman. He will have to rebuild his empire after he escapes.
Between December 2020 and September 2021, a three-part comic book story involving Locke & Key and The Sandman was published. As a prelude to Locke & Key: Hell and Gone, Chamberlin Locke and his children were featured in a prequel series.
Chamberlin’s son John committed suicide, and after his death, he often invoked John’s spirit using the Echo key. Mary, John’s sister, attempted to save John from Hell and bring him back to life in order to alleviate Chamberlin of his pain. Dream’s captor Roderick Burgess initially required a contract to be struck. While searching for answers, Mary risked rousing up the nightmare of The Corinthian by entering Dream’s castle.
Will they have a crossover?
Locke & Key and The Sandman have both been added to Netflix, making this the ideal time for an on-screen crossover. As a result, some of the timeframes may not make sense. Despite the comic book link, the series now live in their separate worlds. However, DC might have hinted at it in one of its tweets.

Just a few days from now, Netflix’s Locke & Key will wrap up its storyline. While fans are really sad that the show is wrapping in just 3 seasons, Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill, the show’s creators, admit that three seasons always seemed “just right.”
