‘The Sandman’ and ‘Doom at Your Service’ Have Some Mindboggling Parallels That Will Leave Your Flabbergasted
Gods, alternative universes, human catastrophes, and everything in between are becoming interesting to watch on screen. The display of such divine powers and their interactions with humans make us feel like the fictional characters are talking to us, about us. Recently released, Netflix’s original fantasy drama The Sandman makes us feel it in so many ways. So does an Amazon Prime Korean drama Doom at Your Service. Both the shows portray the divine power interacting with humans and changing everything.
Everybody knows about Neil Gaiman‘s masterpiece The Sandman and the story of the Lord of Dreaming, Morpheus, who rules the Dream realm. However, the Korean drama Doom at Your Service is about a superpower called Doom. Doom is a messenger between gods and humans who only follows fate with no intention nor passion. Growing tired of his immortal life of bringing misfortune and destruction, he decides to end the world and thus, bring doom upon himself. Both Dream and Doom have lost the passion and purpose for their duties. However, these humans change the entire course of action for them.

Dream in The Sandman v/s Doom in Doom at Your Service
Dream, also known as Morpheus and many other names, is the personification of dreams and nightmares. He is to serve humans. Morpheus can change his appearance depending upon who’s seeing him. He is older and greater than gods. He has lost his purpose and is bitter about his perception of humans. Selfish and greedy humans captured him and imprisoned him for about a century. His perception gradually starts to change as his relationship with Hob Gadling grows.
Doom, on the other hand, is a messenger between God and humans. He also has divine powers like Dream. Doom also can change his appearance depending upon who sees him. He finds himself lost between the worlds because he feels humans are doomed, just like Dream. While he fulfills his duties honestly, he is not at all happy or passionate about it. His thinking stays the same until he meets Tak Dong-kyung.
How do these humans change them?
In The Sandman, Hob Gadling, an immortal human, enjoys his immortality despite going through some trials. When, after each century, Dream meets Hob, he sees great enthusiasm and willingness to continue living his life. Hob also extends his hand of friendship towards Dream. But the treatment he got from humans and the notion of his rules and regulations blurred Dream’s vision. Dream cannot accept it. He despises any human feelings. But after his interactions with Death, Dream’s sibling, he reunites with Hob and says, “It seems I owe you an apology. I’ve always heard it impolite to keep one’s friends waiting.” And thus, Hob ignites feelings of compassion in Dream. Hob is the representative of Hope for The Lord.
The same is the case with Doom. He doesn’t eat, drink, sleep, and nor does he feel. He just does his work and moves on. But Tak Dong-kyung, a web novel editor, is going to die because of an illness. She calls upon Doom unintentionally, and he appears at her door. Despite counting her days on earth, Tak Dong-kyung is an optimistic, energetic, and deeply caring woman, in contrast to Doom. Seeing her fighting for her life, Doom develops feelings for her as she brings hope to Doom’s existence and purpose. Ultimately, they both fall madly and crazily in love with each other. Doom also couldn’t resist the feelings that Tak Dong-kyung ignited in him.

Despite having different relationships with different humans, both Doom and Dream have one common element which is love. They both felt compassion while rethinking their roles and duties. Both the divine entities serve humans and grant their wishes. However, when these divine entities were hopeless and at their lowest, humans rescued them from going down the destructive path. The darkness of both the divine powers gets replaced by light, the light of hope and love.
