When a filmmaker makes a film, he/she adds his/her own perceptions of the plot and characters. It might slightly differ from the original ones, nonetheless, the recreation is also a work of art. Well, the 2020 film Enola Holmes, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, and other skilled actors, faced a legal challenge. But when Henry, who portrayed Sherlock Holmes, faced the question about it, how did he answer?

The original fictional portrayal of Sherlock Holmes was created by the British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. In his series of mysteries, the original Sherlock has efficiency in observation, deduction, and forensic science. He has extraordinary logical reasoning that borders on the fantastic. This original Sherlock doesn’t have any portrayal of emotions until the later stories. But The Enola Holmes Mysteries were written from 2006 to 2021. So, where is the legal issue here? What did Henry Cavill, who plays Sherlock Holmes in the film, say about it?

Henry Cavill admits the issue is not about him but the character

Well, as said earlier, the original Sherlock Holmes is not an emotional detective. However, many actors including, Robert Downey Jr., and Benedict Cumberbatch have also portrayed the character before The Witcher actor. So, where does the problem lie? Well, according to Doyle, his original character isn’t emotional. He doesn’t portray emotions the way Cavill’s Sherlock has portrayed them in the film. Therefore, he sued Netflix for falsely portraying the character, which is still under copyright.

When in an interview Superman had to face this question, he skillfully spoke about it. He said they worked on the character which was working for the film. He admitted, “The legal stuff is above my pay grade.” Cavill also surprisingly said it was the first time that someone sued someone for their portrayal of a character. But later he laughed and said nothing surprises him anymore.

Well, as Benedict’s Sherlock frequently said, “I’m not a psychopath, I’m a high-functioning sociopath. Do your research.” Maybe that’s what Henry seems to adapt to being Sherlock in the real life as he answers the question skillfully.
