What happens when Back to the Future takes a twisted dark turn? You get Rick and Morty. As oversimplified as that statement may be, we cannot wait for more of the intergalactic escapades of the grandfather-grandson duo. Rick and Morty season 6 is all set to premiere on Adult Swim on September 4. With the release almost upon us, one of the showrunners gave some insight into the approach they took this season.

Season 5 took the show to a whole other level as we finally saw some repercussions of Rick and Morty’s misadventures. Now that the evil Morty has broken through the Central Finite Curve and destroyed the Citadels of Ricks, the audience is very curious to know the turn this mind-bending tale would take. There are definitely talks about the Rick and Morty season 6 reexamining some of the previous narratives and seeing them through. Let’s find out together what this actually entails.

Scott Marder on Rick and Morty season 6

Scott Marder became a part of the Rick and Morty creative team during the fourth season. In a recent interview with Inverse, the host asked the showrunner to shed some light about “revisiting various dangling plot threads” from older seasons. Marder illustrated that writers often develop a personal interest in a few “characters and pieces of previous episodes.”

While most of the season 5 episodes were “standalone,” the creators “wanted to move forward and tweak the show so there’s a little bit more interconnectivity.” Their aim this time is to create episodes that “feel more self-aware.” The writers are also keen on readdressing some of the discarded plot points and story ideas. Some of this was part of the Rick and Morty ethos, especially in the first three seasons of the genre-bending animated show. 

Creators are looking to conceptualize a larger serialized narrative. Marder further explains as “fans of the show as well,” they are “excited to pick up those really cool threads and nurture them.” If this means more inside jokes, witty, self-referential, and the quintessential meta storytelling for Rick and Morty season 6, consider us on board and ready to sail.
