Julia Garner offers six steps to becoming Anna Delvey

Garner’s first step to becoming Anna was being flawless with the different accents that her characters demand. For Inventing Anna, Julia had first to learn the German accent and do a little “vocal fire” kind of a thing. Secondly, after German, she also had to take up the Russian accent and merge the two to make Anna, Anna. The accents of Anna Delvey have been tricky and unique since it’s a mixture of German and Russian. But the real struggle was maintaining an American undertone with the question mark while keeping the accents intact.

After the three main steps had given Anna her voice, it was now her mannerism that Julia was immersed into. “Everybody has a nervous tick, and for Anna, as soon as she gets uncomfortable, she adjusts her glasses,” said Julia. And that’s how she gave into her character furthermore. Lastly, it was just becoming a “mirror of Anna herself” to portray the exact character on the big screen, added Julia.
