Netflix has a lot of Originals that cater to different generations of people. They have shows for the Gen Z’s, the millennials, and even the 80s. But what Cobra Kai does is unique and special. The Netflix Original takes its roots from the 1984 movie but gives it the freshness of the present day. It gives you the much-needed dose of nostalgia while serving you with something new.
But one of the things that have been added to the new series and have become a huge hit is Johnny Lawrence’s humor. Johnny’s struggle with technology and his dad jokes have become the highlight of the show. Even his wardrobe is pretty hilarious if you pay attention.
So how does William Zabka achieve this level of comedy? Let us find out.
How William Zabka prepares for Johnny Lawrence in Cobra Kai
Preparing for a role is always a challenging task. Getting into the mentality of your character is of utmost importance for an actor. For example, Heath Ledger locked himself up in a hotel room to get into the psyche of the psychopathic Clown Prince of Gotham, The Joker.
Luckily, preparing for the hilarious Johnny Lawrence William Zabka takes a much less intense step but an appropriate one. In a recent interview while talking about the new season of the show Zabka discussed how plot twists are essential to the story. But they are done in such a humorous way that people never get tired of them.
He then went on to add that the character he feels is like an early caveman and that’s why Zabka does not use his brain much while playing the bad boy turned good Johnny Lawrence.
The actor apparently puts “95% of my brain to sleep” to attain Johnny’s “caveman mentality.” But it is that and “the blind obsession is what’s funny about the character,” according to Zabka.
