The ladies of Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias had little or no sweet serene moments in the romantic drama. Juggling through their everyday life problems, they have accurately made us a part of their lives. And with Sweet Magnolias season 2 finale, one thing we are sure about is we didn’t just have to mourn for our beloved aunt, Miss Francis. It was not just the heart-breaking accident that left us on tenterhooks with season 2’s climactic ending. Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen will have to figure out a lot of things to clear the mess in the seasons to follow.

While we wait to see if there will be a season 3 of Sweet Magnolias, we need to dissect many twisted events in season 2. For instance, Ryan’s dramatic comeback, Cal’s big blow-up, and Dana Sue’s newly found enemy put us in major curiosities. Gratefully, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson cleared many whats and whys in a Q&A session with Entertainment Weekly. Hence, without wasting much time, let’s dive deeper into the flukes that inspired the drama to have these certain changes of events.

Helen’s ex-mister makes a dramatic entry in the finale of season two to mourn for Miss Francis’s loss. Seems like that’s not all he was mourning for. He got on one knee to propose to Helen right away. But she was now in a perfect relationship with Eric. Why bring Ryan back when Helen and Eric found their balance? EW asked Anderson the opening question. To which she replied, “we wanted to bring him (Ryan) back at a moment where his return would be most meaningful, and also disruptive, because that’s what the drama is all about.” Seems like the balance is about to get disrupted.

Teasing about Helen’s future in the show, the showrunner said Helen will be on fences. She shared: “I hope to heave a season 3 to be able to figure that out. I know what she’s going to say, but I wouldn’t guess that timeline. If we’re fortunate enough to have a season 3, that will be one of the chief topics at the beginning of the writers room.”

All about Cal’s anger issues and his future with Maddie

Interestingly, in season one, we see Cal as a hometown hero. However, as the series continues, he had a dark past and immense anger issues we discover. Talking about the exploration of Cal’s anger issues and past, Sheryl revealed, “We knew when we were writing him in season 1 that he had a lot of pain based on his past relationships.” She further said, “We wanted to walk a careful line and make it clear that he had done enough work before he met Maddie. That he would never show that side to Maddie and the kids, and when that side finale does come out, it’s in defense of Maddie..”

Further, talking about what potential third season of Sweet Magnolias on Netflix has for Cal, she teased, he will have to figure out if he made the right decisions and had his anger controlled in its entirety. Seemingly, “Cal unknowingly triggered” a lot of issues from Maddie’s previous marriage with Bill when he punched Stu and got himself arrested. According to Anderson, “Cal will now have to examine why he lost it when not losing it is so important to him and what choices he can make going forward. Not just for himself, but also for the people he loves.”

The revelation of Issac’s biological father and its impacts on the kids in Sweet Magnolias Season 2

On being questioned about Issac’s biological father; she said, “We decided that (who will be Issac’s father) before we wrote anything. Evidently, they wanted to bring in an “I’m new to town” perspective to things, but actually be deeply tied to the town.” SeeminglyIssac brought light to Bill’s personality. She further said: “A show like ours looks at how choices in your past continue to inform your present, and we wanted to look at if [giving Isaac up] was the choice we trace through to see how adult Peggy was created.”

Entertainment Weekly asks her to light how Issac’s reveal affects other characters. “I hope to explore not only how that impacts the kids and their perception of Isaac, but also their perception of their dad, which they’re still working through because of Noreen [Jamie Lynn Spears] and the divorce. How it affects their trust in other relationships in their lives, particularly with authority figures,” says Sheryl J. Anderson.

We see a quirky new character in season 2 of this drama. Kathy surely has a past in serenity and an agenda for the present. Seems like her arrival will affect everybody’s future. Entertainment Weekly inquired about her role in the series. To which Anderson intelligently replied, “We wanted to indicate that if we come back, not everything is under control.” If season 3 will come, dropping this meteor in the season 2 finale was truly a monumental decision.
