Stranger Things is not just a show. It’s a major phenomenon all over the globe. Even since the show first came out in 2016, people have constantly been talking about it. These talks only intensify when a new season drops. And naturally, when a season like the latest one releases, people talk about it in equal magnitude.

A testament to this is how Stranger Things is dominating Twitter by remaining at the top trending spot for almost a month. But these talks and debates also take the form of theories. And fan theories for the fourth season have been coming in even before the new season was released.

But a new fan theory suggests Stranger Things‘ connection with one of the greatest franchises ever: The Lord of The Rings. Let us see what the theory is and does it make sense.

Are Stranger Things and The Lord of the Rings connected?

Fan theories have been an essential part of Stranger Things, and even the show creators have praised some in the past.

So that’s why the cast of the newest season, including Joe Keery, Natalia Dyer, Maya Hawke, and Joseph Quinn, took turns reading some of the most popular theories regarding the show.

While many of these theories were regarding the series and its characters, a particular one linked the horror drama series to what can be considered the most influential franchise of all time, The Lord of The Rings.

The theory suggested that: “The Upside Down is just another portal to Middle-Earth. Samwise has gone to return to Frodo, his one true love.”

The theory calls back to the season two character of Bob Newby. Bob had a brief yet important role in season two as he was the love interest to Winona Ryder‘s Joyce Byers.

Bob was played by none other than Sean Astin, who everyone shall remember as Samwise Gamgee, the faithful companion of Frodo.

Newby was killed in the second season. So the theory suggests somewhat of a happy ending for the character. But unfortunately, it all seems like a way of wanting a happy ending for a character who did not get one.
