No amount of Demobats or Demagorgons can match the terrifying demon king Vecna. With his telekinetic powers and the ability to murder teenagers from another dimension, he is the most powerful being from the Upside Down that the Hawkins gang has faced so far. But despite that, we found out that he has a weakness: music. Interestingly, this was already hinted at way earlier, back in season Stranger Things 2 when Will Byers was under Mind Flayer’s grasp.

Music always played a part in escaping the horrors of the Upside Down in Stranger Things

Music was always significant in snapping out of the Upside Down. It just wasn’t given a central role until season 4. We notice this first in season 2. Will Byers was under Mind Flayer’s control and to save him, the gang constantly reminded him of happy memories and played his favorite songs. Eventually, Will was able to regain back some of the control, although not entirely. Again, in season 1, Eleven was able to find Will when he was humming The Clash’s Should I Stay or Should I Go. We also think that it was music that helped him survive that long in the Upside Down in season 1.

For Billy, music and happy memories of his mother snapped him out of Mind Flayer’s control. Max escaped the hellscape just before Vecna was going to murder her thanks to the gang playing Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill.

After Vecna fails to take Max, he goes after Nancy, who is harboring guilt for Barb’s death. With Nancy alone in the hellscape, the gang has to quickly find out her favorite song before she joins Vecna’s corpse collection. Now the scene with Eddie aggressively playing his guitar in the trailer makes sense. But what is her favorite song? Fans believe it’s Toto’s Africa that was playing in the background when Steve and she were making out in Stranger Things season 1
