Although many people discovered Kate Bush’s music through season 4 of Stranger Things, Taika Waititi couldn’t help but mention how the inclusion of Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) in the Netflix blockbuster spoiled it for him. Waititi, a longtime Bush admirer, is fully aware that many people today claim to know Kate Bush’s work when they only know one song. In a recent interview, he shared his opinion about the Duffer Brothers using the song.

Taika Waititi feels Stranger Things spoiled Kate Bush for him

Stranger Things has always had a strong musical component. Over the years, The Duffer Brothers have frequently utilized legendary 80s melodies at pivotal times in the series.

The music utilized in the program has reached an altogether new level in Season four. The 1985 Kate Bush single flew to the top of the charts, and Metallica’s Master of Puppets also gained traction after featuring in the series finale.

Taika Waititi recently told NME that he was irritated that The Duffers used one of his favorite songs.

He stated: “You mean how they ruined Kate Bush? I love that show, but as someone who feels a real ownership of Kate Bush music… I’m really annoyed!”

The Jojo Rabbit director continued by saying that he has done the same with Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song.

Waititi used the 1970s song in his first Thor: Ragnorok film. And he adds that whenever he hears the Immigrant song now, the only thing he can see is the “bloody opening of that damn film.”

Interestingly, Taika wanted a Kate Bush song in the film before Stranger Things four premiered. Waititi had several ideas for using Kate Bush’s song in Thor’s homecoming.

This would have entailed incorporating This Woman’s Work into a sequence with Jane Foster, performed by Natalie Portman.

While all of Waititi’s Kate Bush hopes were dashed, he was able to bring the power of Guns N Roses to the party, which surely matches the bright, loud, vintage atmosphere that the filmmaker has created once again.
