Netflix has a great lineup for 2022. They have new seasons of some extremely popular shows already released or in pipeline. However, the most exciting part of this year has to be Netflix Original films. This year the streaming service is making huge strides in terms of cinema that they had not explored before. One of the best films that Netflix shall stream this year is Spiderhead.

Apart from an unsettling plot, the movie has some of the biggest names in Hollywood tied to it both in front of the camera and behind it. But there must’ve been a reason why all the big stars chose to do a rather unusual film for their resumes.

Scriptwriter duo’s belief in Netflix Spiderhead

For any actor or director to pick a film, they first need to believe in the script. And luckily, the scriptwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who also collaborated on 6 Underground and Deadpool almost worked on Spiderhead for a decade. As a result, many of the huge names in Hollywood could not say no to it.

Joseph Kosinski joined the team to dive deeper into the technology-induced chaos

The leader of the project is the visionary director Joseph Kosinski. Over the years, the architect-turned-director has made a mark in the sci-fi genre. He brings his architectural background and his love for intense visuals to all his projects.

However, for Spiderhead, the reason he joined was not the visuals. It was because he felt there is an ever-growing influence of technology in society, which he feels will eventually cause chaos. “Technology’s not going to save us. There’s no pill or app that’s going to make us love each other more or behave better,” said the director.

Chris Hemsworth loved the complexity of his character in Netflix movie, Spiderhead

Chris Hemsworth is probably the biggest name attached to the newest Netflix psychological thriller. The Australian actor will always be remembered as Thor. But he has also proven his range as an actor in films like Extraction and Bad Times at El Royale.

In Spiderhead, Chris will further expand his boundaries as an actor by playing the enigmatic Steve Abnesti. Hemsworth joined the film for the same reasons as Kosinski: the themes. Chris was especially excited about playing the role of Abnesti, whom he calls a complex character, who is not a hero or a villain.

Chris said, “There’s quite a bit of complexity in Abnesti in the sense that he does believe what he’s doing is just.”

Miles Teller picked Spiderhead for its freshness

Central to the story and the experiments of Abnesti is Miles Teller‘s Jeff. Miles is a favorite of director Kosinski. The duo has previously collaborated on films like Top Gun: Maverick and Only the Brave.

But apart from working with Joseph, Teller fell in love with the freshness of the story. He said, “I’ve never done anything quite like this in tone before. The core of this story is really about people who are carrying a lot of weight around with them. Weight they’re trying to shed.”

Jurnee Smollett will also be seen in the film. Her character Lizzy develops a strong relationship with Jeff over the course of their stay in the institute. And their relationship is one of the primary reasons she did the film.

She cited her reasons as “I remember being so incredibly moved by Lizzy and Jeff’s relationship. I just loved the metaphor in their storyline.”
