The plan to install two sculptures of Breaking Bad characters, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), at New Mexico’s Albuquerque Convention Center has sparked outrage among some of the state’s Republican leaders. The erection of the statues was on July the 30th. But, almost a month since the erection of the statue, they are the new topic of debate in Albuquerque.

Breaking Bad statues have become a topic of debate among Republicans

At the presentation of the sculptures, Gilligan stated that everyone would not welcome commemorating two fictitious, prominent meth traffickers. Gilligan said, “In all seriousness, no doubt some folks are going to say, ‘Wow, just what our city needed.’ And I get that.”

It turns out that Gilligan was correct. Eddy Aragon, an Albuquerque-based conservative talk radio broadcaster, and Republican state lawmaker Rod Montoya are two public figures who have condemned the 500-pound sculptures. While talking to Fox News recently Montoya said that even though he is happy for all the business New Mexico had due to the states he doesn’t approve of the statutes, “We’re going down the road of literally glorifying meth makers?”

Adding to Montoya, Aragon said whether this is the kind of image people want to have for Albuquerque. Moreover, after the state opted to remove a statue of Spanish adventurer Juan de Oñate, Aragon slammed the state for installing Breaking Bad memorials. “Now we’re putting fictional characters out in front. We have Jesse Pinkman and, of course, Heisenberg. And we have now erected statues, and our progressive mayor from the city of Albuquerque has stood behind them,” he said.

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller stated that erecting Breaking Bad monuments was acceptable. He cited the beneficial economic impact of the program on the city over the years as an appropriate reason for the statutes. The Mayor said, “While the stories might be fictional… jobs are real every single day. The city is also a character… We see ourselves in so many ways, good and bad.”
