‘The Sandman’ Could Have Had Its Own Herogasm-Esque Sequence, but It Never Did: Reveals Producer Allan Heinberg
The year 2022 seems to be the year of comics. Not only did we get to see multiple projects from the famous Marvel Cinematic Universe, but many other studios also released other live-action comic adaptations, one of them being Netflix’s The Sandman. Another comic book series that excited the fans this year was the third season of Amazon Prime’s The Boys.
On the surface, The Sandman and The Boys couldn’t be more different. One show is about the mighty Dream, while the other is about evil superheroes. However, the two shows were almost going to feature a similar event known as the Herogasm from The Boys comics.

The Sandman was originally supposed to have a Herogasm sort of sequence
In The Sandman, the most crucial and horrifying scene came in the form of episode 5, 24/7. In the epsiode, after acquiring the ruby, Dr. John Dee goes to a typical American diner to test his theory about truth and lies. What happens in the episode is that all lies fall, and people engage in acts of intercourse and then ultimately kill each other. However, it wasn’t how things went down in the comics.

In the comics, instead of people having sex in couples (like what happened in the Netflix series), they instead engaged in an orgy just like Herogasm from The Boys. While talking about the scene, producer Allan Heinberg said, “I knew that in the comic there’s an orgy, everybody’s having sex with everybody in the comic,” but he didn’t “think the orgy is going to be the way to go.”
Regardless of the difference between the adaptation and the comic material, the scene was of extreme importance to the show. In fact, The Sandman comic book on which the restaurant episode is based, 24 Hours, created by artist Mike Dringenberg, is regarded as a tough and existentially horrifying classic among Gaiman fans.
