Mindy Kaling opens up about being Indian in foreign countries!
Television is one of the most powerful tools to convey social status to people. With the help of television, you can convey any feelings to people. And because of television, you can connect to different cultures. Mindy Kaling has an Indian background. Therefore, in her works, she can represent that Indian-ness accurately.
Recently, in an interview with Forbes, Mindy talks about the powerful Asian female characters that counter the stereotypes. Asian women are shy; one of many stereotypes is broken by Mindy herself. She says that when she writes any Asian story, she tries to show a different side of the Asian American experience no one has ever seen before. The show focuses on a South Indian Hindu, who grew up in the US, and there is a Muslim girl as well. Naturally, there is a cultural difference between them.
“The Asian experience is not a monolith,” says Mindy. People wouldn’t know this if there weren’t any shows that explain and explore this difference. And that’s why Mindy strives to create stories and characters that explore the depths of Asian representation.
