The first set of episodes from the finale begins with the Byrdes in their van. The family is contemplating whether they should continue living their life in the Ozarks. Returning to Chicago seems like a viable option for them. Through the course of the series, we (and the Byrdes) are introduced to Navarro’s nephew Javi. In the season 4 part 1, the cartel leader wishes for Marty and Wendy to use Maya and the FBI to help him seem legitimate.
Later, a number of characters slowly get eliminated as Javi is on a killing spree. He shoots Darlene and Wyatt as baby Zeke cries in the distance. Ruth takes the baby over to the Byrdes as soon as she discovers what happened to Wyatt. The last episode concludes with Ruth being beaten up brutally.
Why is Ozark ending with only 4 seasons?
For a show as popular as this Netflix Original, Mundy had the option of milking this cow for years to come, but he chose to finish the show fairly quickly. In reference to this, he said that he felt the need to “stay emotionally true” to the show without repeating the same situations again and again. Ending the show after 4 seasons seemed like the best option between “overstaying their welcome” and having “plenty of room to tell the story in a way that it did justice”. We already know that season 4 part 2, i.e., the finale of Ozark is intensely going to focus on “marriage and family“.
What did Mundy have to say about Ozark season 4 part 2?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mundy said “I liked the idea that everyone wanted the same thing but some seemed impossible and ludicrous, and the others seemed doable, and where to sort of raise some class intersect on that, and who’s the bigger hypocrite in all this?” This was in reference to Navarro’s passionate journey towards “legitimacy” while the Byrdes have the face of legitimacy, but are just as guilty as him, if not more. He points out how all characters of the show are essentially the same if seen from different angles.

As for Navarro, Mundy calls him a “survivor”. This indicates that while this character might be jailed, fans have a lot more to see of him. He has the potential to make a significant impact even from jail, inevitably affecting the Byrdes.
Finally, Chris Mundy says that the final tease of Ozark season 4 part 2 “comes down to Marty and Wendy”. As we mentioned earlier, the finale of Ozark is about “marriage and family”. The couple must figure out what is best for them, with Ruth inevitably entangled in the mess.
