“Sequels are a conversation and a reality”- Why Is Netflix Green Lighting Films Like ‘Enola Holmes 2’?

With Netflix churning out new content by the second, it is hard to believe that the streaming goliath once did not have an “original film” category. In fact, it has barely been 5 years since the Netflix Original film department came into existence. Today, the catalog is up to the brim with an amazing portfolio of proprietary movies. So much so that the streaming platform is now taking the next step. Can you guess what that is? Enola Holmes 2 might be a big hint.

Well, we are obviously referencing sequels. Having treaded the waters with romantic comedies and teen flicks like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Tall Girl, and more, Netflix is now expanding its sequel roster with more genres. What are the benefits of this move?

Why is Netflix betting on sequels like Enola Holmes 2?

With popular TV series like Stranger Things, Squid Games, Never Have I Ever, and more, the audience gets invested in the universes of these shows and falls in love with the characters. Hence, they always keep coming for more. This phenomenon works for films as well. In Enola Holmes, fans were in awe of the 1800s setting, the enigmatic fast-paced narrative, and the characters. They especially adored the quirky detective played by Millie Bobby Brown.

Additionally, in the first month itself, the 2020 film had an estimated viewership of 76 million households. So a sequel for the mystery flick was a no-brainer. According to Mary Parent, the producer of the Enola Holmes films,

It’s pretty impressive that sequels are a conversation and a reality.”

In fact, the streamer wasted absolutely no time getting the second movie on track. Moreover, screenwriter Jack Thorne, director Harry Bradbeer, as well as the cast, including Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill, were also excited about returning to the world they built.

You try not to take it for granted. And you try to raise the bar on yourself, to up the storytelling, up the stakes with everything that you loved about the first but also something new,” stated Parent.

Good sequels help transform successful films into prospering film franchises. Enola Holmes 2 premiered just a day ago on November 4. If the film does well and engages the audience enough, there might even be a part 3.
