Rejected at First! Throwback to When Ryan Reynolds Turned the Tables for the First ‘Deadpool’ Film With His Unbelievable Marketing Tricks
When Ryan Reynolds starred as Deadpool in the X-Men films, fans loved him immediately and demanded a separate film starring Merc With A Mouth. Moreover, when the Canadian actor himself read the Deadpool comics, he became obsessed with it. He wanted to create the film so badly that he pitched it 11 times. Each time, the film got rejected. But how did the actor turn the tables?
When someone leaked the test footage of Deadpool, fans went crazy over it. They campaigned to make the film starring the 46-year-old actor. However, no one except Fox decided to take the risk on one condition, as pointed out by Twitter user Brian O’Connor. The studio agreed to pay $37M as the lowest budget to make the film. Although it seemed impossible to make an entire film on the lowest budget as this, Reynolds made it possible with his brilliantly creative marketing tricks.

The actor made a plan to create the film and advertise it as well. First, he decided to make the audience make emotionally connected to Deadpool. How did he do it? He used low-cost social media and invited guests to his advertisements. He showed the character as valuable yet vulnerable. As soon as the film hit the theaters, Reynolds became anxious to see if his marketing tricks worked.
Surprisingly, Deadpool became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. The film earned $783M and broke the record. It turned out one does not need a big budget. They need the right tricks to make things work.
