Netflix Says NO to Freeloading With Its New Password Sharing Terms and Conditions

We all have used someone else’s Netflix account at some point, haven’t we? Well, for many years, Netflix chose to overlook this illicit password sharing process that took place among friends, family, and even exes. However, Netflix feels now is the time to address the issue, and has come up with new password sharing conditions.

This new initiative by Netflix is to help the primary account holder to better understand who all use their account. And if they wish to let people outside their household keep using their account, they need to pay an additional fee.

This is to stop the freeloaders from keep using someone else’s account without their consent. In a new blog post, Chengyi Long, director of product innovation at Netflix, informed the users about the upcoming changes.

Chengyi wrote, “We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account. As a result, accounts are being shared between households — impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.

Therefore, the streamer has decided to add a new feature: “add an extra member.” This is in the wake of the recently increased subscription rates in different parts of the globe. The streaming giant believes this new feature will help it invest in better user experiences.

In the upcoming test of their new password policy, users in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru will have to pay an additional fee for extra members in their plans.

The prices for new members in the test countries are 2380 CLP in Chile, $2.99 USD in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN in Peru. Netflix is yet to decide whether to make this a global change or not. And for now, only these three countries will experience the new initiative.

Only if a device from outside the home connects to the account may a member will need to authenticate their account; Netflix may then ask the user to validate the login from the device by providing a verification code.
