The 25-year-old British actress, Charithra Chandra made headlines as she nabbed the most coveted role in the Bridgerton series. She is to play Edwina Sharma, the “diamond of the season” in the upcoming season. But the actress has opened up about the struggle of a minority actor in a white-dominated industry.
“Minorities are often alluded to as being there to tick boxes, to fill a quota,” she said. Because of such low representation, the actors feel immense pressure to represent the entire community. And Chandran is feeling the same pressure as the premiere date comes closer.
“When you are a minority you invariably feel the weight of representing your entire community. If I’m being really honest and vulnerable, in my head I’m like, ‘Oh God, if people don’t like me in this or if I’ve done a bad job, I’ve ruined it for my entire community.’” Colored actors are made to feel unworthy and unwanted. Chandran shared one heartbreaking story that left her discouraged: “I had people at university tell me, ‘You only got the lead in that show because they needed to have a person of color in it.”
Simone Ashley talks about being insecure
The Netflix series is known for its racy scenes. But it is also known for hiring an intimacy coordinator to assist in such scenes. However, the bare-all scenes need extreme confidence in one’s body to pull it off. Simone Ashley spilled that she “wasn’t apprehensive”. Now she just has “fun with it.” Simone plays Edwina’s sister, Kate Sharma in the period drama.
The Bridgerton star landed her first role in Alex Rider
Chandran’s breakout role was in Alex Rider. However, acting wasn’t in her long-term plan. With a degree in Philosophy, Economics, and Politics, she got her first job at London’s consultancy firm. But she decided to take a one-year break before stepping into the corporate world. For one year, she starred in several short films and contacted agencies. And one year later she had two roles in her kitty!
The young actress will be romancing Anthony Bridgerton, while her sister Kate Sharma continues to thwart their dates, in the new season. The risque drama is making a comeback on March 25.
