Vincent van Gogh was indeed one of the best artists the world has produced to date. Sadly, he rose to prominence and had a significant impact on Western art history, but all of it happened after he died. There are a lot of people who get recognition after they leave this world, and the Dutch painter was one of those. There are many stories about him, and once an unusual attempt was carried out to tell his tale in a cinematic way.

In 2017, the film Loving Vincent came out with a story about the painter and his life. The film is a historical drama that mainly focuses on his life and the events surrounding his demise. Including many surprising facts about the film, the very first one is that it is the first film in the world that is completely painted. Being an animated flick, its makers decided to paint it instead of using digital mediums for its creation.

The writers and directors of the film, Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman are known for their work on unique animated films. The paintings that were made to create the animated frames were a total of 65000. About 125 painters from across the world used the same methods as Van Gogh to create them. But what story does this film tell and where is it available?

Where can you watch the film based on Vincent van Gogh?

Loving Vincent beautifully portrays the story of a man who travels to Vincent Van Gogh’s last residence to deliver a letter. The story, which takes place in 1890 France, centers on a man who looks into the painter’s last few days when he was alive. The makers have made an attempt to touch people’s hearts just the way van Gogh’s paintings did.

The film stars Robert Gulaczyk, Douglas Booth, Jerome Flynn, Saoirse Ronan, and Helen McCrory (known for her role in Peaky Blinders). Sadly, it was also the last film of McCrory before she passed away in 2021. Although, it won several awards, including Best Animated Feature at the 30th European Film Awards in Berlin.

The film was truly a remarkable attempt at portraying van Gogh and the life he lived. It came out in theaters in 2017. The film is not streaming on Netflix but you can watch in Prime Video and buy it on Apple TV to watch.
