Although the show is a fictional recreation of the events of the past, it has three widely renowned Vikings at the center. The spinoff series takes place 100 years after the events of the Vikings. It focuses on popular vikings, namely Leif Eriksson, Herald Sigurdsson, and Freydis Eriksdotter.

Leif Eriksson was a fabled explorer from Iceland, with some believing he discovered North America before Christopher Columbus. Freydis, sister of Leif, was involved in his exploration trips spreading the Norse religion. Herald Sigurdsson was the King of Norway from 1046 to 1066.
