Netflix’s The Sandman premiered today. The show is based on a comic series by Neil Gaiman of the same name, published between 1989 and 1996. It has been hailed as one of the most anticipated programs of the year for all the right reasons. From blending genres to creating a new kind of fantasy horror, it’s been the most awaited show. In the Netflix show The Sandman, Lucifer, played by Gwendoline Christie, is a true villain. She is best known for playing Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones.

About Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman

As far back as the Bible and even before that in elemental forms, the fallen angel Lucifer Morningstar has been a regular evil visitor in Western culture. However, in Neil Gaiman’s revered comic “The Sandman,” Lucifer is shown in a way that differs from the typical. Having reigned over hell for billions of years, Lucifer in The Sandman is fed up. She intends to make it everyone else’s problem.

Netflix, however, has previously hosted Gaiman’s demon, having produced the last three seasons of the Tom Ellis-starring Lucifer series. On the other hand, Netflix and series producers Gaiman and Allan Heinberg sought to pay homage to The Sandman by reimagining Ellis’s Dark Prince in a new way. They found themselves on Tarth’s beaches in the Stormlands of Westeros during their season for the perfect Lucifer Morningstar.

Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer

Gwendoline Christie has made a profession out of taking on parts that seem unattainable. Even in her very short acting career, she’s done a lot. A preternaturally tall and preternaturally likable actress was found in Christie to play the underdog Westerosi warrior Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones.

She said, “Neil wrote the comics [30] years ago, so sometimes he would say there were things that he would change or have updated. But because he had such a strong voice throughout it all, you felt very much in the best hands. I adored working with Tom Sturridge. From the minute that I met him—he was in costume, and in character—I knew that he was dedicated to this project.”
