Netflix was so sure that its flagship shows like Stranger Things and The Umbrella Academy would turn things around. However, the streaming giant continues to lose subscribers left, right, and center. With around 1.3 million subscribers lost just in the US and Canada, Netflix seems to be grasping at straws to save its sinking ship. Netflix extra home fee is the latest solution the platform has come up with.

What is Netflix Extra Home Fee?

Netflix has always been vocal about expressing its displeasure regarding password sharing among subscribers. Now, the streamer wants to put a complete stop to this practice. Netflix announced an extra home fee structure for those who share an account and don’t live in the same household—still using your ex’s Netflix password? They might soon change it once they get charged for it from this summer onwards.

The streaming giant will levy a $2 – $3 seemingly small fee from 22nd August first in the countries of Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Argentina, and the Dominican republic. According to Netflix’s post on the Honduras pricing page, “If your Netflix account is being used on a TV outside of your home, you will need to pay an extra $2.99 per month for each extra home. You will only be charged when you or someone who uses your account chooses to add an extra home – this fee will NOT be automatically charged.”

This will soon be a worldwide practice for Netflix users. Depending on your streaming plan, you could add up to 3 extra homes. This will cost you between $9.99 and $19.99. For travelers, there is a small window with no extra charge. So far as you haven’t used that location before, you can continue streaming for a fortnight outside your household. Also, the streamer will now block the additional TV if the user doesn’t pay the extra home fee.

Fans unhappy over Netflix’s extra charges

Users who are already losing faith in the streaming platform and are absolutely livid about these new “extra home” charges. Users believe Netflix is just employing the ‘nickel and dime’ route. Twitter saw a barrage of displeased subscribers expressing their beef against the streaming giant.

Users are threatening to cancel their accounts should these charges become a norm. Fans are also pointing out several issues with the new policy for the members who are constantly on the go or families that are separated.

Users also predict that this move by Netflix is counterproductive and will cause the platform to further lose viewers. They also believe that these extra charges will only work for the short term and ultimately end badly for the OTT platform.

Angry users are not holding anything back and even sarcastically calling out on the streamer. Only the affluent and people belonging to a certain social class will be able to subscribe to Netflix.

There is still a lack of clarity regarding the “extra home” and “extra member” fees. Will the consumer have a choice between the two, or will Netflix come up with another not-so-creative idea to prevent losing customers? Only time will tell. Netflix’s economical and ad-supported supplement for a budget-friendly plan also didn’t bode well, owing to its shrunken and inferior collection. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
