Best Selling Crime Fiction Writer Stephen King Calls This Phenomenal Netflix Series a “Firecracker”
Stephen King is no stranger to crime fiction and crime thrillers. The King of Horror is no stranger to movies, either. With several of his acclaimed publications going on to become best-sellers and later being adapted into timeless movies, King’s approval is a seal of genuine creativity. Recently, the author gave his nod and spoke highly of a hit Netflix crime thriller that took the world by storm when it was released.

Netflix has a vast repertoire of shows that have found its liking among various factions of its audience. However, a few of those shows carry that imprint onward and forward as they become globally acclaimed. One of those shows that took over the streaming and entertainment world by storm was Money Heist. The Spanish crime thriller, which was first released in 2017, was taken over and distributed by Netflix. Now, Stephen King has found himself wowed over by the show, which he called a “firecracker” in a post on Twitter, now X.
Stephen King himself has several movie adaptations of his books to count. The Shawshank Redemption and The Shining are two movies based on his acclaimed books. Exhibiting a remarkable creative wit, the author only recommends books, shows, and movies that are genuinely good. Thus, it comes off as a big win for the show, which was originally titled La Casa de Papel. The 75-year-old best-selling author has asked all those who love “heist capers” to wander over to the show.
Interestingly, the Stephen King-approved show did not find much audience initially. However, as soon as Netflix took over, it was a different story altogether.

La Casa de Papel was initially released as a Spanish show and ran from 2017 to 2021. Originally distributed by Spain’s Antenna 3, the show had a limited outreach and a small audience base. However, Netflix acquired the rights to the show and worked its charm all over it. The effect of lesser-known shows surging in popularity and attaining heights on Netflix has been well documented and termed The Netflix Effect. Money Heist is one of the biggest proofs of it. As soon as it was taken over by Netflix, it split and reorganized the show into seasons and smaller episodes.
Additionally, the streaming giant used its broad network and studio prowess to provide state-of-the-art dubbing and subtitles to the show. The result was that after its release on the streaming platform; it surged in popularity. Moreover, the catchy theme song and the intriguing plot quickly caught over, and it became a global phenomenon. It even inspired several remakes and regional adaptations. Furthermore, the show also became Netflix’s biggest foreign language show ever. The sky-high jump that Money Heist took still rebounds to this date with a spin-off, Money Heist: Berlin in the works.
