Anna Delvey aka Anna Sorokin was convicted for a scam where she pretended to be a German heiress with millions of dollars in her pocket. Between the years 2013 and 2017, she had managed to swindle millions of dollars, having others pay for the lifestyle she was leading. In 2019, journalist Jessica Pressler wrote an extensive article for the New York Magazine, shining a spotlight on her crimes.
Sorokin was too smart since the start. She joined Manhattan’s business world claiming that she had a $60 million dollars trust fund in Europe. To maintain her lifestyle, she defrauded people through expensive trips, hotels, and restaurants, all while paying no bills on her own. In 2017, police arrested her and she remained in jail for two years before her jury conviction. She was then convicted for 4 theft services, 3 grand larcenies and 1 attempted grand larceny.
Where is she now?
After an early release, ICE arrested Anna for overstaying her visa and has been in custody ever since. During this time, she contracted Covid-19 and is currently waiting for the ICE courts to reach a decision about her deportation.
Inventing Anna on Netflix and Anna Delvey
Her journey from an heiress to a New York socialite and finally ending up in jail, Rhymes attempts to capture all of it in the new upcoming show Inventing Anna. Since her incarceration, Anna has been on the receiving end of a lot of media attention, from articles to one-hour TV specials. And unsurprisingly, she is not so fond about it.
Recently, Sorokin/Delvey wrote a letter for the Insider, in which she says, “While the world is pondering Julia Garner’s take on my accent in Inventing Anna… the real me sits in a cell in Orange County Jail in upstate New York, in quarantine isolation.”
Throughout the letter, Anna expresses her disdain on the media coverage and the treatment in jail that she had been receiving since her arrest. She is not excited about the Netflix show, despite being involved in its research process. While she is curious about creator Shonda Rhimes’ interpretation, she says, “it doesn’t look like I’ll be watching Inventing Anna anytime soon. Even if I were to pull some strings and make it happen, nothing about seeing a fictionalized version of myself in this criminal-insane-asylum setting sounds appealing to me.”
