“Don’t Look Up,” directed by Adam McKay, has taken the audience by storm. The satirical black comedy film is available on Netflix. The film’s setting depicts two scientists attempting to warn the world about a global extinction event. The movie features an ensemble cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, and Jonah Hill. The supporting cast includes Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Timothée Chalamet, Ron Perlman, Ariana Grande, and many more.

The plot revolves around the reactions of the US government, media outlets, and citizens. While the end of the world is near, everyone is keen to make a profit out of it. The film mocks the non-believers of the climate crisis. Throughout the last few decades, scientists have discussed how climate change can have a significant impact on humanity. As soon as the news made rounds, people called it a “conspiracy theory” or a “hoax”. Soon, “flat-earthers” made their entry to the game.

Given this group of people, Netflix “Don’t Look Up” perfectly captures how ignorance can lead to humanity’s demise. Furthermore, the film makes fun of the government and the media for portraying such serious issues in a lighthearted manner. It also sheds light on the profiteers of misery and their influence on the masses.

Netflix – Don’t Look Up and the climate crisis

Astronomers Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) discover a previously known comet just inside of Jupiter’s orbit. She warns her professor Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio), who then calculates that it will strike the Earth within the next six months. Keeping in mind the size of it, they decide to run the data through NASA. When the data is confirmed, the duo decides to notify the President. This is when things go downhill. President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her son and chief of staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), dismiss the warning at first and only take it seriously when it benefits the government.

With so many hoaxes going around, it’s difficult to believe that an extraterrestrial body will wipe out humanity. Following the same logic, “the citizens and people of the world” disregard the warning. Similarly, the movie has picked up on the satire of how people react to issues like this. One of the world’s most pressing issues is the climate crisis. Scientists are working around the clock to conduct research and discover a solution to save our Mother Earth. The film examines people’s reactions that are very similar to the reactions of those who do not believe in the climate crisis.
