Inventing Anna is one of Netflix’s most popular shows, and it’s no surprise. The show, created by Shonda Rhimes, is mostly based on true events, but the creators have taken creative license and some parts are entirely fictional. It is based on the true story of con artist Anna Sorokin, who deceives the wealthy into fulfilling all of her extravagant desires. It’s a nine-episode series starring Julia Garner as Anna Delvey, with Anna Chlumsky, Arian Moayed, and Katie Lowes.

People aren’t supposed to admire or sympathize with characters like Anna. These characters are intended to make people think about their life choices and to encourage them to look before they leap. It has a significant impact not only on that person’s life but also on the lives of those around them.

Anna deceived not only businesspeople and corporations into lending her money. She also deceived her friends and romantic partners. Anna’s main goal was to be “someone,” therefore everyone and their feelings were merely collateral damage. Anna was indifferent about her own well-being. She was concerned about how she was perceived by the general population.

Watching someone like Anna conning her own friends talk a lot about the mentality that goes behind. In this world, where we are all strangers it is difficult to figure out the intentions of others. Betrayal comes from friends that are very well aware of your strengths and weakness. Here’s wishing we never come across someone like Anna.
