2 Years After ‘Free Guy’, Shawn Levy Reveals “Headaches” Caused By ‘Barbie’ Amidst Plans For a Sequel
Anyone who watched Ryan Reynolds‘ Free Guy has been waiting for a sequel since. The film, which was released on Netflix back in 2021, has since been popping up with updates over the last two years. At the time, the story of an NPC that comes to life and into the real world seemed like something brand new. But with Greta Gerwig’s latest blockbuster hit, Barbie, the game has been taken to the next level.
Recently, the director of the film, Shawn Levy, revealed that a sequel was not definite after months of speculation. But the surprising part was the reason behind his uncertainty.

According to Collider, Shawn Levy sat down for an interview, where he revealed that even though the first film was such a huge hit, the idea of a sequel was being questioned. He revealed that the questions arose only after the success of Barbie, as the films have similar themes. He went on to tell the interviewer that working on the project has been “thrilling for Ryan Reynolds”, as well as for himself, but with the mark Gerwig’s film left on the world, the director felt that his sequel should go a different way.
In fact, Levy went on to say that Free Guy 2 would only be made “if it’s different than the first movie and if it’s different from other movies.” While that may leave the fans a little disappointed, it was not a definite “no.” While the film still remains unannounced by Disney at the moment, there might be a change in plans if the director can figure out how he wants to move forward.
This revelation comes two years after Free Guy was released and stunned the entire world. While the film was a huge hit, it was not the storyline that grabbed the audience’s attention.
The best part of Free Guy
The film may have grossed $331.5 million when it was released, but it was not because it one was of the first good films that were released after the pandemic in 2020. Instead, it was Ryan Reynolds being his authentic, witty, and sarcastic self. His humor had audiences clutching their stomachs in laughter, as he always does. Recently, he even took to his Instagram to share another one of his brilliant jokes.
