In the genre of historical epics, there are only a handful who command as much intrigue and fascination as Napoleon Bonaparte. From his indomitable spirit to his military prowess and complex legacy, he has inspired countless portrayals on both screen and stage. The anticipation surrounding Ridley Scott’s Napoleon film was at a fever pitch until recently. The film promised its audiences a cinematic journey that delved deep into the life and times of this enigmatic historical figure.
Although the film premiered in Paris, the critics were not pleased with what the director had created. In fact, some French critics even voiced their opinions about it, which has now triggered a response from Scott himself.

While Napoleon was supposed to be another blockbuster for Joaquin Phoenix, it looks like those dreams are long gone. After the French premiere in Paris, critics ended up calling the film, “Barbie and Ken under the Empire.” Another publication also called the film“deeply clumsy.” Although most directors would have let it go, Ridley Scott responded to BBC by saying, “The French don’t even like themselves,” according to reports from Deadline.
He went on to say that the reaction had been different the first time around. Scott went so far as to claim that the audience had “loved it.” Although that may have been the case, it seems to have changed. Even biographer Patrice Gueniffey also had her reservations about the film. She even said that the film was “very anti-French and pro-British.”
While the French have revealed that they did not like the film, the rest of the world still does not know what to expect.

The film will take its audience on a journey to the military commander’s origins and his love story with his wife, Josephine. While it promised to shine a different light on the man, the rest of the world will have to wait a little longer before they can judge for themselves. So far, it does not seem as though people like the film all that much, but in a few weeks, that might change.
