The Netflix book club is out! Now Netflix will release a curated list of books right before releasing trailers and, subsequently, shows and movies, based on the books. It’s the ideal situation for both bookworms and cinephiles.

Before the first episode of the Netflix book club with Uzo Aduba, here is a list of must-watch movies based on books.

• Mudbound

The McAllen family is unprepared and a bit too optimistic for Henry’s (Jason Clarke) big ambitions related to his farm after having relocated to a small town from the city of Memphis.

Meanwhile, the Jacksons, whose family has worked the land for centuries, strive valiantly to create another life for themselves. As their returning loved ones (Jamie and Ronsel) from the second World War develop a quick and uncomfortable relationship, it throws their family plans into disarray.

Based on a 2008 novel of the same name, Mudbound on Netflix is an epic tale of friendship, unappreciated heritage, and the never-ending fight for your homeland and against its unforgiving people.

• The Irishman

What could be better than a movie starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci? Better yet, this movie is based on a book- one as amazing as Charles Brandt’s I Heard You Paint Houses.

The Irishman is a tale of organized crime post-war. We watch America develop from the 1940s to the 2000s through the eyes of World War II veteran Frank Sheeran, a hustler, and hitman who worked with some of the twentieth century’s most infamous characters. The film provides insight into the secret corridors of organized crime and revolves around the mysterious disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa.

While this Academy Award nominee is 3.5 hours long, it is anything but boring!

• The Woman in the Window

Amy Adams was perhaps the most successful actress of the last decade. Her work in 2021 is certainly no less. One of her most critically acclaimed movies is The Woman in the Window.

Anna Fox is an agoraphobic child psychologist. Fox stays home because of her condition and, as a pastime, keeps track of her neighbors- a seemingly perfect family. This diversion turns dark and extremely disturbing when she witnesses a brutal crime. Based on the thrilling best-seller of the same name by Tracy Letts, The Woman in the Window is a must-watch on Netflix.

• Little Women

Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel Little Women has had many adaptions- and deservedly so! But only Greta Gerwig was able to fully capture the sheer wholesomeness of the book.

Little Women is about 4 young women- the March sisters, each of different temperaments, each trying to find their place in the world. The movie encircles their lives as they are on the verge of entering adulthood and finding life outside their cozy little family. Featuring Timothee Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Laura Dern, and the extremely enthralling Meryl Streep, the movie couldn’t have done more justice to the book.

• 12 Years A Slave

Two decades before slavery was abolished, two white men conned a free African-American man. A violin player with a happy family, Solomon Northup, was sold into slavery. Upon claiming he was a free man, he was beaten to a point of near-death. Northup endures the hardships of slavery- from sadistic owners to being lynched and hung on a noose for hours before being rescued.

Nominated for 9 Academy Awards, and winner of 3, including Best Picture, 12 Years A Slave certainly captures the details and brutality of the agonizing memoir of Solomon Northup’s life.

• Schindler’s List

Perhaps one of the most touching movies ever, Schindler’s List is based on the historical fiction novel Schindler’s Ark by Thomas Keneally.

Oskar Schindler was a successful industrialist and a powerful member of the Nazi Party. However, unlike his fellow party members, Schindler treated the Jews with humanity and tenderness. He offered them employment and saved many Jews from being sent off to concentration camps. During the end of the World War, while members of the Nazi party were busy escaping trial and killing as many Jews as possible, Schindler sold all of his fortunes to save the lives of 1200 Jews.

To this day, Schindler remains the only member of the Nazi party who was buried at Mount Zion, a landmark revered by Jews.
