The Sandman

For ages, the world has been mesmerized by the tales of God and God-like creatures. Being with unimaginable powers who are as old as time. And who being of unfathomable power is more famous than Dream himself. Neil Gaiman is most popular for introducing the world to the exceptional universe of The Sandman. For more than three decades people have avidly read his comics and learned more about Morpheus and other great characters.

But finally, the time has come, and people will witness the live-action adaptation of The Sandman through the mind of Neil himself.

Everything you need to know about The Sandman

In 1988, DC Comics used the phrase "I will show you terror in a handful of dust" to introduce readers to The Sandman. It was, like Swamp Thing before it, a reimagining of a very minor DC character, with writer Neil Gaiman attached to it. The series was a huge hit with fans outside of the comic book industry, proving that arty comics could coexist with superheroes.

Its concepts, breadth, and characters are also ideal for television adaptation, but the rights holders took a long time to realize this. According to Gaiman, he was originally planning to adapt The Sandman into a film in 1991, and the show will eventually premiere on Netflix in August.

What's the show about?

The Sandman narrates the story of Morpheus, often known as the Dream of the Endless, an unimaginably old entity who is also the living embodiment of dreams. He resides in The Dreaming, a region where he caters to the REM state of beings all across the cosmos; of course, this means he spends a lot of time around Earth, wooing gods, motivating idiots to become authors, and occasionally provoking waking terrors. At the beginning of the series, in 1916, an immortality-seeking magus kidnaps a tired Morpheus. He ultimately escapes in 1989 and sets out to restore order to his ruined realm.

How is The Sandman different from other series?

Multiple comic book adaptations have been made in cinema ever since the extremely successful re-launch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008 with Iron Man. But despite the dozens of comic book adaptations out there, The Sandman by Netflix is unique in a crucial way. According to executive producer Allen Heinberg, the show is different as it will take the viewers on different journeys with each episode.

However, another thing that makes The Sandman anything, as we have never seen before, is the creator, Neil himself. In a recent interview, the creator of the comics who developed the Netflix adaptation clarified that it is not a retelling. Instead, it is a modern-day adaptation that stays true to the comics in every way possible.

He said, "It's not like I looked at Sandman and went, 'We need to update you.' It's much more, 'Okay, we're going to set it now. What does that mean for the story? How is that going to affect things?' And the answer is, mostly, it doesn't affect things at all."
