The Oscar snub clearly didn’t sit well with The Mitchell Vs. The Machines. The creative team is still not ready to let it go. They recently tweeted “Animation is Cinema” which is no less than a veiled criticism at the Academy Awards. 

The Twitter account had also previously poked fun at the prestigious event with various GIFs. 

What happened at the Oscars 2022?

A little context for unawares, The Mitchell Vs. The Machines was nominated for the Best Animated Feature film, but it lost to Disney’s mega-hit, Encanto. Although there were a lot of cheers for Disney’s win, there were others who felt that the film was robbed of its much-deserved award. Disney has always dominated the Best Animated Feature category, so it was always a big challenge for Sony to beat Disney in this category. 

And it doesn’t end here. If the loss wasn’t bad enough, presenters Halle Bailey, Naomi Scott, and Lily James belittled animated films for just being kiddie flicks that parents have to “endure”. Creator Phil Lord expressed his disappointment in a tweet after the award ceremony. That endure comment disregarded the hard work of the writers and the creative teams behind the animated movies. 

But nonetheless, the film got its fair share of awards and recognition at the Annie Awards. It beat Encanto, Luca, Sing 2, and Raya and the Last Dragon to win across eight categories. 

The Mitchell Vs. The Machines comes from the duo who brought Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse

The wholesome animated feature film comes from the creative duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The duo also worked on another fan-favorite Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the movie was to have a theatrical release in January 2020 with the title Connected. But due to the Covid induced delay, the production house released it directly on Netflix in January 2021 with the new title. 

It follows Katie Michelle who is growing increasingly distant from her family. Before going to college, her father insists that they go on a family bonding trip. Soon it becomes more just a fun trip when an evil AI creates a robot uprising to take over the world. Now the Michelles have to save the world from the catastrophe.
