Never Have I Ever: Creator Mindy Kaling Reveals Why It’s Best to Say Goodbye to Devi Vishwakumar and Co in 4 Seasons
The hilarious teen dramedy, Never Have I Ever has wrapped up shooting and will be hitting the streamer in Summer 2023. Netflix still hasn’t announced the official date yet, but rest assured it’s coming back. Although the good news came with another bad piece.
The show, loosely based on creator Mindy Kaling’s own teenage years in Boston will end with season 4. Fans are beyond disappointed, but Mindy has a valid reason for making such a call.
The characters cannot spend 12 years in high school

Most of the actors on Never Have I Ever are in their twenties. The lead actress, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan who plays Devi is 20 and Jaren Lewinson (Ben Gross) is 21. The biggest surprise is Darren Barnet who appears as Paxton. Darren is 30 years old! Indeed he looks especially young for his age but the actor cannot play a high school heartthrob for another 12 years. He will be 40+ years old! Moreover, high school generally ends for people in four years. If the show goes on for more seasons, it’ll just lose relatability.
“Four seasons for a high school show felt like it made sense. They can’t be in high school forever. You’ve been in high school for 12 years—what is going on here? Also, the actors get older and it starts looking insane that a 34-year-old is playing a 15-year-old,” explained Mindy.
The majority of the shows set in high school like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Pretty Little Liars all had their characters graduate.

Never Have I Ever Season 3 will feature more bad decisions and steamier romance
But Mindy and co-creator Lang Fisher assure fans that they’ll have plenty of things to look forward to. The upcoming season of Never Have I Ever will dial up the romance aspect. “We can’t wait to reveal all the steamy romance and hilarious adventures we have in store for you.”
Despite the show coming to an end in two more seasons, the creators are happy that they could tell Devi’s story in full.

“The great thing about doing it on Netflix is that we got to tell stories that you wouldn’t necessarily be able to tell in traditional network shows and so we feel good. We really told the story of this 15-year-old girl and that felt like the perfect amount of time,” she added.
