The main culprit, Warren Jeffs, is now in lifetime imprisonment. He took over the FLDS after Rulon Jeffs, the previous leader, died at 92. One of Rulon’s wives, Rebecca Wall, successfully escaped and revealed the secrets of the cult.

Who is Rebecca Wall Musser from Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey?

Rebecca Wall Musser is the author of the book called The Witness Wore Red: The 19th Wife Who Brought Polygamous Cult Leaders to Justice, which she wrote in 2013. She escaped from the FLDS in 2002 and testified against Warren Jeffs in his trial in 2007.

In 2013, Rebecca founded an NGO dedicated to educating people on recognizing and escaping abuse and oppression named Claim Red Foundation. Her parents are Sharon Steed and Lloyd Wall. Steed was also one of Wall’s two wives, which means Rebecca grew up watching all these complicated relationships.

Rulon Jeffs, eighth President of the FLDS from 1986 until his death at 92, married 20 wives in total and had about 60 children. Rebecca’s father forced her to marry Rulon when she was just 19 years old, while Jeffs was 85 then. When Jeffs passed away, his son Warren started to marry his father’s wives. Rebecca resisted and decided to escape from the community. That’s how Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey came about.

How did she escape?

Rebecca left a note on her bed for her mother and sister in 2002 before her escape. She scaled a 6-foot-high wrought-iron gate and managed to slip past the security guards. She then walked half a mile towards her freedom. Ben Musser, then her future, but now her ex-husband, was waiting for her in the car. Ben is technically her grandson, as he was the biological grandson of Rulon and one of Rebecca’s sister-wives.

Astonishingly, Rebecca was the only person in her family who escaped the church. Rebecca married Ben Musser and had children with him: a 14-year-old Natalia and 18-year old Kyle.
