Why Was Hasan Minhaj’s Infamous Netflix Show ‘Patriot Act’ Cancelled?
Why was Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj canceled? Minhaj could make you laugh with his truth bombs, but the magic fell short on the streaming platform. The American standup comedian began with humble beginnings and grew up to have his own show. Patriot Act, in fact, won Peabody Awards and two Webby Awards. The series premiered on Netflix on October 28, 2018, and lasted nearly two years, the episodes for which were exclusively available to watch on the streaming platform.
Patriot Act was both co-created and co-produced by Minhaj and Prashanth Venkataramanujam with Jim Margolis, amongst others. The show had a total of 40 episodes spanning six seasons. But despite the series doing so well, some issues and controversies led Netflix to cancel the series, leaving fans forever yearning for season seven. Why was Hasan Minhaj’s Patriot Act canceled?
Minhaj’s Patriot Act was the perfect dose of satire that would keep you entertained and expose you to worldly affairs. But when discussions get political or controversial, everyone finds themselves walking on thin ice. Unfortunately, Hasan is no exception. According to Variety, the weekly talk show genre is always a difficult one for Netflix to be successful with. The topics of discussion in these episodes were extremely vast. Right from talking about Indian politics to the Saudi regime, taking the series on a global scale.

One particular episode that stirred up trouble was when the site removed an episode of the show from its Saudi Arabia library. The episode had the comedian criticize the Saudi Government over the killing and cover-up of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The decision to remove the episode upset the comedian, but it was beyond his control and likely contributed to the show’s cancellation.

To top it off, the ultimate weighing that led Netflix to not renew the show was comparing the series’ production cost to the viewership received. Though considering the big-scale series that the platform has canceled previously, it is actually commendable that the series lasted so long.
