When Ryan Reynolds Turned Into Mario for Rather Amazing Reasons
Ryan Reynolds is a Free Guy. We don’t just mean it in the sense that he says the first thing that comes to his mouth, even on live television. We are talking about the Deadpool actor and his brilliant performance in the unique action comedy film Free Guy, a video game movie like The Super Mario Bros. Movie. But unlike the latter, the Ryan Reynolds starrer is not based on an existing video game. Instead, the movie is set within a video game. With the trailer of the Mario movie finally out, we are looking back to the time when the actor became Mario.
Ryan Reynolds is a Free Guy in Mario’s Mushroom Kingdom
If you have watched the 2021 Shawn Levy-directed masterpiece, Free Guy, then you know what we are talking about. The movie consisted of a brilliant screenplay written by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn. The movie was unlike anything you have watched. It follows ‘guy’ as he discovered that he is a character in a massive multiplayer online game, Free City. During its promotions, the creators of the movie created multiple posters, one even featuring Reynolds in a Mario-themed poster, with the actor replacing Mario.

In Free Guy, the aim of the characters of Free City is to rob banks. The player who has successfully robbed most banks leaving behind others is the obvious winner. Things get interesting when we enter Free City and understand that the players actually have no idea that they are a part of a big video game world.

When MolotovGirl, which is the avatar of an unemployed software developer named Millie, sings Fantasy, guy or Ryan Reynolds glitches. He begins to do more than what he is programmed to do. The plot follows the quest of the programmers in real-world to ban guy and him finding ways to show up in new areas.
How Ryan’s character develops self-awareness and so do the surrounding characters is the kerfuffle that Free Guy revolves around. Apart from the brilliant performances by Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, Sarah Schecter, Greg Berlanti, and Adam Kolbrenner, the icing on the cake is Reynolds playing iconic video game characters.
