Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had a dream royal wedding on May 19 at the St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. However, there was a lot of drama involved in the week before the grand ceremony. Apart from the rumors of Meghan making Kate Middleton cry, the Duchess of Sussex made headlines due to her father, Thomas Markle. The former director of photography announced his decision to not attend his daughter’s wedding due to heart surgery. 

Meghan Markle announced the same on her official Twitter handle. However, the absence of the former actress’ father was a major concern. A lot of speculations were made regarding who will walk the Suits alum down the aisle. Some predicted that Meghan will walk alone, while many thought that she could be accompanied by her mother Doria Ragland. However, the royal fans were in for a surprise as it was Harry’s father, now King Charles III, who walked the actress down the aisle. Though it was an extremely special gesture, Markle’s words before the ceremony took His Majesty by surprise. 

Meghan Markle made a special request 

Before the ceremony, Meghan Markle asked Charles if she could enter the venue alone. As mentioned by Robert Hardman in his book, Queen of our times, the former actress was keen on walking the Chapel alone. She suggested the King join her in the second half of the walk. 

“Can we meet halfway?” were the exact words by Meghan as quoted by Marca. Markle did create history on her wedding day by being the first royal bride to climb up the stairs alone at St George’s Chapel. Notably, it was Prince Harry who requested his father to walk Meghan down the aisle.

The royal Prince made this revelation in 2018 during a documentary that aired on BBC One. “I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you.’” Harry revealed this in the documentary.
