One source, two Devils! We are talking about the two diametrically distinct versions of Lucifer Morningstar on Netflix right now. While both are renditions of the fallen angel penned down by Neil Gaiman in The Sandman comics, they couldn’t be more different from one another. If one were to assign songs, Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones perfectly matches Tom Ellis’s version in Lucifer. The Sandman’s Devil by Gwendoline Christie is, without a doubt, Call Me Devil by Friends in Tokyo. Although, if the two celestial ever came together, that would be a “Hell” of a party.

The audience absolutely adored Tom Ellis’s iteration of the charming Devil with daddy issues in the procedural sitcom, Lucifer. So much so that there was an army of upset fans after the announcement of the new ruler of hell in Netflix’s adaptation of The Sandman. Nevertheless, Christie’s dynamic screen presence and amazing performance eventually won people over. The showrunners of Lucifer have a lot to say about Gwendoline Christie’s portrayal and even some wishful thinking about a crossover or possible spinoff. 

The Sandman-Lucifer spinoff

Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson, the showrunners of Lucifer, were recently promoting the Blu-Ray/DVD release of Lucifer season 6. When asked about Gwendoline’s devil persona, Henderson expressed his love for The Sandman version of Lucifer Morningstar. He believes that Tom Ellis wouldn’t be a good fit in that universe “because her (Christie’s) Lucifer is cruel, and brutal, and awesome.”

“It would break our hearts if Tom Ellis played that version of it, because ours is very sweet and kind,” added Henderson. Moreover, season 6 ended on a happy note for Lucifer and Chloe. We wouldn’t want that to be messed up, right? However, fans need not be disheartened just yet, as there may be a silver lining. Henderson wants to bring the two light-bringers together; differences and all. He wants “to write the road trip spinoff of the two of them traveling America together and getting in trouble!”

Additionally, if and when The Sandman gets renewed for a season 2, there could even be a crossover episode. Lucifer started off in a totally different direction from Gaiman’s world. However, it had some connections to the Arroweverse through Crisis on Infinite Earths. Lucifer’s cameo in the CW show uncovered his devil is set in Earth-666. Though short-lived, this appearance could mean more crossovers with DC comics and hopefully in Netflix’s The Sandman.
