As of the 2022 Oscars, Campion has made quite the mark with The Power of the Dog. The film is leading the pack with a total of 12 Oscar nominations. Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Kodi Smit McPhee and Jesse Plemons have all received nominations for their acting. Campion has also received the nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for the same film. Despite being put up against the likes of Steven Spielberg (West Side Story), Kenneth Braugh (Belfast), Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza) and Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car), there is a high chance that Jane Campion might take home the award for Best Director.
Throughout the 94 year history of the Academy Awards, only seven women have been nominated for Best Director. These include Lina Wertmüller (Seven Beauties), Sofia Coppola ( Lost in Translation), Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) and Campion twice for The Piano and The Power of the Dog.
