The star believed that ‘The Man’ itself explained the reality. Brown further explained Swift dressing up as a man in the video was something Enola would have also done. Set in the 19th century, Enola Holmes saw the young girl’s struggles to become a detective, emerging out of the shadows of his brother Sherlock Holmes. But because she was a girl, she had to face a lot of troubles which also made her hide her identity. Therefore, as the British actress revealed, Enola would have loved to be a man because it would lead her further in life with ease.

Based on Nancy Springer’s book series, the Netflix Original saw Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes alongside the Damsel actress and Sam Clafin. The film has many themes, including sexism, which was prevalent back then and even now. Therefore, the song that the two Primetime Emmy Awards-nominee chose supported that theme. In the song, Swift talks about the idea of gender perception. If one would look closer at the lyrics, it also talks about how the world would perceive her mistakes and achievements differently if she were a man.

The same thing happens with Enola in the film. Despite being equally intelligent as her brother, Sherlock, she does not get enough recognition. She even saves the day by helping Sherlock solve a mysterious case. However, it is Sherlock who gets the credit in the public eye. While Enola becomes an example of breaking the barriers, the recently engaged actress also once sent a powerful message to all the young warriors, encouraging them to stand up for themselves.
