Summary of the film
The plot of 1917 centers on two fictitious British lance corporals who are entrusted with preventing a battalion of 1,600 soldiers from entering a German trap. One of the guys, Blake, has a personal interest in the assignment since one of the troops targeted by the German trap is his elder brother’s.
While Schofield and Blake are made-up characters, Mendes based his war drama on actual events. The film shows the brutal realities of trench fighting, the conflict’s impact on civilians, and the condition of the war in April 1917.
The cast of the film includes Colin Firth as General Erinmore, George MacKay as Will Schofield, Dean-Charles Chapman as Tom Blake, Benedict Cumberbatch as Colonel Mackenzie, and Richard Madden as Joseph Blake.
