The Witcher vs the Wheel of Time – Taking On the Legacy of Game of Thrones
The thing about being the best is that you will always see people trying to recreate it. Just the way people recreate some of the finest musical pieces of artists from the past like The Animals, or the paintings of none other than Vincent Van Gogh. Well, it is the same thing happening with HBO’s legendary fantasy drama Game of Thrones. Based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire, which is an absolute beauty (and also incomplete); the show created a fandom that is just way too splendid to even fathom. We now have The Witcher vs The Wheel of Time fighting to become the next big thing.
The Witcher vs The Wheel of Time – which of them is the next big fantasy series?
While there are dozens of shows based on books; they can claim that they have the potential to win the title of “next GOT”. But there are just two right now who have what it takes to not just become the next big thing, but also do that with their own name and not be called “the next”. Netflix‘s fantasy drama The Witcher brings to life the glorious world of the book series of the same name book series; created by the Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime’s The Wheel of Time lays its claim to the throne as well. The show is based on Robert Jordan’s book series of the same name; said to be the next big thing from Amazon.

The Witcher and its popularity
One advantage that The Witcher series has over any fantasy series is its humongous fandom. The book readers, the gamers, the dedicated show lovers, and, of course, everyone who went to it after the huge GOT disappointment. The ability of the story to hold on to so many people together says a lot about the quality of the series. Geralt of Rivia finds himself at the center of everything in this Netflix Original; along with Princess Cirilla and Yennefer of Vengerberg. Weaved around various themes like war, love, and mystery, along with the Law of Surprise, The Witcher is bound to be something grand. The show’s cast comprises some of the most amazing actors, including Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, and Anya Chalotra.
The Wheel of Time – Amazon’s attempt at the fantasy genre
It seems like Amazon is really trying everything in its power to create the supposed “next Game of Thrones”. “I want my Game of Thrones, ” Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, has said. The Wheel of Time is one of the two attempts made by the company; along with a very ambitious Lord of the Rings show. The Wheel of Time tells the story of a book series of the same name, written by two writers, namely Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson (Sanderson stepped in to finish the story after Jordan’s death). Starring some talented actors including Emmy Award winner Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, Marcus Rutherford, Madeleine Madden, and many more; the show has all the potential in the world especially because of the source material.

What is your pick for the next big Fantasy Drama Series?
While The Witcher has been Netflix’s one of the biggest shows ever since it was released back in 2019, The Wheel of Time has seen an equally enthusiastic reaction from the viewers. The reviews of the first few episodes of the Amazon have not been that great, but it is maybe a bit too early to predict the future of the show; especially because it has already been renewed for a second season. The Witcher too is arrived with its second season this December 17, 2021, on Netflix.
