Time and again Meghan Markle lands herself in one or the other controversy. The former American actress is not very fond of giving interviews. However, whenever she speaks, she sparks a debate with the people dissecting her every word and action. Meghan’s marriage to the Duke of Sussex was revolutionary in many ways, as she was a divorcee and an American woman of color. 

However, while describing her marriage to Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex went a step ahead as she delivered a bizarre statement. She compared herself with the likes of anti-apartheid activist and former South African president Nelson Mandela. The controversial remarks by Meghan Markle did not go well with a lot of people across the globe, especially in South Africa. And soon the American star was subjected to a lot of hate and criticism. 

Meghan Markle draws flak on social media 

While interacting with The Cut last month, Meghan Markle claimed that one of the South African members of The Lion King film told her that she is widely adored in the country. Meghan attended the premier of the live-action movie in London in 2019. Narrating her interaction with the South African guy, the Sussex royal revealed that the cast member told her, “When you married into this family [the British royal family], we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison.”

The anecdote shared by Meghan Markle landed her in trouble. People on social media slammed her as she put herself on the same pedestal as Mandela. 

Nelson Mandela’s grandson reacts to the statement

Nelson Mandela’s eldest grandson, Mandla Mandela, was not at all happy with Meghan’s remark. He bashed the Duchess of Sussex for comparing her marriage with Nelson’s release from jail. Mandla further described his grandfather’s release as the culmination of over 350 years of the struggle of millions of people.

In an interview with News24, Mandela added, “Every day there are people who want to be Nelson Mandela. Either comparing themselves with him or wanting to emulate him.”
