What is goop?
In 2007, Peter Arnell joked about how “successful internet companies have double o’s in their name” and Gwyneth Paltrow decided to launch goop. goop was simply a play on Arnell’s joke and Gwyneth’s initials, G-P. The company started out as a weekly newsletter. Now, Paltrow’s wellness and lifestyle brand is large enough to have a second self-produced documentary on Netflix.
The newsletter contained Paltrow’s recommendations for workouts, diets, and recipes. The brand slowly gained popularity due to Gwyneth’s role in Iron Man, for which she is best known now. Subsequently, there was a goop website, podcast, magazine, branded products, treatments, health summits, a lot- and we mean, a lot- of stores, and finally, the Goop Lab, followed by Sex, Love, and Goop.
The journey was, of course, not easy.
The Goop Lab
The Goop Lab was the first Goop documentary Netflix had released. It was a 6 episode documentary series that covered everything from psychedelic drugs to female sexuality, anti-aging to cold therapy. While the audience has opposing views on the portrayal of these practices as facts, the series was collectively praised for its positive outlook on women’s issues.
