Ryuichi Sakamoto Dies at 71, Here Is a Look at the Oscar Winning Composer’s Work
Music maestro and anime composer Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away at the age of 71. The Oscar winner leaves behind a great record of creating masterpieces that were recognized and admired by the world. He created over 48 soundtracks and continued his work even during the last stages of his life. Some people are known forever through their work, and Sakamoto proved to be one of them.

The maestro took his last breath on 28th March 2023 in Tokyo Japan where he was undergoing treatment. He was diagnosed with terminal rectal cancer which could not be prevented. In honor of his memory, here is a look at his creations and rewards.
Ryuichi Sakamoto leaves behind a plethora of timeless creations
Ryuichi Sakamoto was already loved for his renowned and unique creations in Japan. The Western world got a taste of his talent through his work with David Bowie for the 1983 film Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. While the movie garnered average reviews, the composer earned a good appraisal. In 1987, he was chosen again for the movie The Last Emperor. This time, he bagged the Oscar Awards, followed by a chance of composing music for the 2015 film The Revenant. He was part of the Yellow Magic Orchestra playing keyboards as they performed around the world, known for their house and techno music.
The composer contributed to a great number of anime throughout his career. Japan Sinks: 2020, Appleseed, Rabbit Ears: Peachboy, My Tyrano: Together, Forever are part of his works. One of his last contributions to the anime world was the 2022 sci-fi anime Exception. He also composed for games such as Dawn of Mana, Tengai Makyou: Ziria, L.O.L: Lack Of Love, etc.

What were his musical inspirations?
While the late composer was an inspiration to the world, he was influenced by several factors. He admired French composer Claude Debussy and reflected on how music influences each other’s cultures. He grew up listening to The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. But growing up, his love for electronic and techno music only deepened. Being influenced by so many musicians, he has left a legacy that the younger generations will look up to.
