It has been 10 years since we first got to dwell in the universe of Rick and Morty. Utterly dark and delightfully crude humor, the Adult Swim series is a portrayal of bonkers adventures through space and time. Even after 5 seasons, and 51 episodes, it continues to hold our interest in a way only a few shows can.

Notably, the sitcom was created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, the former of whom provides the voices for both of the show’s titular characters and the latter of whom has invested a lot of himself in the role of mad scientist Rick. Now, although we cannot contact the dimension-hopping duo to know their secret, we were lucky enough to come across an interview with Dan Harmon, where he gives us insights on how he kept the show fresh and relevant.

Dan Harmon talks about how Rick and Morty persists till the very date

Perhaps it persists because of its sci-fi tropes, clever pop culture riffing, and raw hilarity. Or maybe the grandson-grandpa duo knows their audience all too well! They are capable of both great and terrible things. However, that is not true in its entirety. According to Harmon, the true magic lies within the hands of young writers.

“I’m 49 and the show is 10 years old, so what is its hope of staying fresh and relevant? The answer is younger writers and not me going away but me deferring, trusting them, listening to them,” he told the panelists. He further said how if he would just impose the rules, he would become a villain, and hence, he doesn’t do that. Instead, he tries to become Uncle Gandalf and says, “I did this a long time ago. So I can tell you what’s going to be difficult about it. Like, let’s figure this out.”
